WA Keys2drive Scheme Ends 31st March, Practical Beginner Driving Learner Expands

For 14 years, Keys2drive, an Australian Government-funded program, has provided learner drivers and their parents a free driving lesson with a government-approved professional driving instructor. With the program ending on the 31st of March, Dovetail Driving School has announced that free lessons will no longer be available. However, beginner driving lessons at the school will now incorporate principles from the Keys2drive program.

Dovetail Driving School recommends that learner drivers without experience book beginner driving lessons. These lessons in a manual or automatic vehicle will teach students to ‘Find Their Own Way’ to become safer drivers.

Since its inception in 2008, The Australian Government estimates Keys2drive has helped more than 600,000 people and has cost approximately $4 million in annual funding. However, according to multiple independent studies, the program still needed to achieve the measurable road safety improvements hoped for and is being shuttered.

Despite the Keys2drive program no longer being available, lessons are integral to learning to drive safely and responsibly. Dovetail Driving School offers on-road driving training in Perth’s northern suburbs supported by a fully qualified and accredited driving instructor. The instructor will pick up and drop off students from home, school, or their chosen location.

Lisa Archer, the sole owner/operator, believes that learning to drive is not just about practising on the road and in traffic. During a Dovetail Driving School lesson, students become familiar with the car. They learn the correct seating position, proper driving posture, and how to hold the steering wheel correctly. The Dovetail Driving instructor also focuses on parking, breaking techniques, hazard awareness, weather conditions, and the importance of mirrors and blind spots. The lessons’ duration depends on the student’s requirements and ability. An initial assignment can take one to three hours.

“At Dovetail Driving School, learning to drive means much more than acquiring skills to pass a driving test. We pride ourselves when Dovetail Driving students pass; they won’t just know how to move a car competently but maintain safety for themselves and others on the road,” says Lisa Archer, spokesperson for Dovetail Driving School.
