  • Mohammed Mukhtar 25 has gone back to the basics to deliver anything in Pollokshields Glasgow using e cargo bikes

    Court-e-Bike, by Mohammed Mukhtar, Glasgow which claims to be Glasgow’s first fully integrated e-cargo bike delivery service, has revealed it has saved nearly five tons of carbon from vans and cars since launching its zero-emissions service in Pollokshields last year.

    Glasgow, United Kingdom, 16th Mar 2023, King NewsWire The project’s target is to save an estimated 100 tons of carbon over the next five years to help improve Glasgow’s air quality. Currently applying for an award from SP Energy Networks’ Green Economy Fund to purchase more e-cargo bikes in August 2023.

    The Glasgow based innovator Mohammed Mukhtar has now made deliveries to over 60 stores and travelled more than 100km.

    “I’ve been cycling forever.”

    Since the age of 5 or 6, he’s loved it. It’s always been his chosen way to get around rather than driving or on public transport and now it’s his livelihood.

    Court-e-Bike said its e-cargo bikes help reduce traffic and pollution issues in Glasgow by reducing the number of delivery vehicles on the streets and helping the city on its journey to become the UK’s first Net Zero city.

    Mukhtar from Pollokshields, Glasgow had been thinking about setting up an e-cargo bike delivery service for quite some time, toying with the idea for a few years before the pandemic and he just couldn’t get it out of his head.

    When Mohammed Mukhtar hit 25 in October just there, he thought it’s now or never, because he’d just get too comfortable – be too afraid to give up a steady income. He put together a business plan, and with the support of his local community in Pollokshields, Glasgow, he decided to go for it and set up Court-e-Bike Deliveries. 

    I wish I’d done it sooner to be honest, but the resources I needed to match my vision for the business also weren’t available until that moment, so it all just seemed to come together at the right time. Running Court-e-Bike allows me to build a business around my life and around my city – Glasgow. Before, I was leaving the house at 6am and I wasn’t back until after 6pm, and I just felt I wanted to be more involved in my family, and community. The business is growing slowly and steadily, and I have some really brilliant, forward-thinking clients. 

    Mukhtar’s company delivers fine wine and expensive whiskies, delicate flowers and artworks, medicines, and sensitive electronic equipment.

    I can pretty much deliver anything although I draw the line at wedding cakes, and Glasgow sheriff court documents, police documents, stuff like that – for now at least. We’ve had people asking us to deliver drugs like cocaine for them, but I’m proud to say that’s never going to happen. I don’t have a wish to be breaking the law and get arrested. All it takes is a little bit more thought and a change of your approach to logistics, which we’re here to help with. 

    Mukhtar from Glasgow, is launching a website based service, where customers can just order from selected places that are signed up for this service.

    The infrastructure needed to run this website is quite extensive, but we’ve managed to secure investment with the help of the local community within Glasgow, so we should be up and running very soon. 

    With big changes coming to Glasgow like low emissions zones and traffic-controlled areas and its becoming expensive to run a BMW, the small changes needed to use deliveries will be nothing compared to the benefit. 

    Mukhtar can deliver a maximum load of 100kg, which is equivalent to 85 bottles of wine or a giant Panda bear or a baby elephant.

    I’ve not actually transported any animals yet, but hey, you never know. If a veterinary centre needs my help, I’ll be there.

    Glasgow is now more than a year post-COP 26 and it would be great to see more businesses in our city adopt a sustainable approach to deliveries.

  • Permutable Significantly Increases Accuracy of Company Carbon Emissions Estimates in International Study

    LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, March 16, 2023 — Permutable is pleased to announce positive initial results from its ongoing carbon emissions data modelling programme in partnership with Innovate, the United Kingdom’s innovation agency.

    The project aims to improve accuracy and transparency around company CO2 emissions globally using machine learning techniques. Current estimates are limited by gaps in global company emissions reporting data. There are large discrepancies in reporting on Scope 1-3 emissions and carbon estimation is a considerable obstacle to correctly tracking the world’s decarbonisation efforts. Permutable’s goal is to fundamentally improve and add more detailed insights into how carbon emissions can be better estimated through the use of artificial intelligence, particularly for companies whose carbon emissions remain unreported.

    Using machine learning to improve carbon emissions estimates
    Previously, emissions would typically be estimated using statistical models – e.g. mean, weighted average (by # of employees) for a certain industry/country pair. These approaches can be very rigid compared to machine learning models. That is because they focus on their ability to explain results, starting from a hypothesis and then modelling predictions based on that. By contrast, machine learning approaches will beat current industry standards due to their flexibility and ability to incorporate a wider variety of features – for example, number of employees, industry, energy consumption etc. This may not be possible to mathematically model and using a simple formula like a weighted mean of number of employees will give very poor predictions.

    Increased accuracy in carbon emissions modelling
    The initial results reported here confirm that, using machine learning techniques, the accuracy of carbon emissions modelling for the different emission scopes is 74 – 97% better than using country averages, using smaller amounts of data.

    Scope 1 emissions – 96% improvement over industry mean
    Scope 2 emissions – 74% improvement over industry mean
    Scope 3 emissions – 97% improvement over industry mean

    There were 10 industry groups considered in total including Infrastructure, Extractives and Minerals Processing, Financial, Technology & Communications, Resource Transformation, Health Care, Services, Consumer Goods, Food & Beverage and Renewable and Alternative Energy.

    This suggests great potential for more accurately predicting corporate emissions across multiple countries and industries, and is expected to increase overall transparency, reliability and therefore confidence in carbon emissions predictions.
