  • DQ Institute Sets New Framework to Revolutionize ESG Approach in Digital Economy

DQ Institute launches the Digital-ESG framework today, the Safer Internet Day (SID) 2023. Complementing and expanding on the current ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) framework, Digital-ESG addresses the growing concern over digital-related risks from negative impact of technology on society and the environment, as well as digital-related opportunities from positive impact of digital transformation to enhance sustainability.

The new framework aims to provide companies with the comprehensive tools and guidance they need to navigate the evolving digital landscape with responsibility, transparency, and accountability. Digital-ESG was developed in collaboration with Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and South Korea’s Future Consensus Institute, and through discussion with multi-stakeholders at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Davos 2023.

The global digital economy, estimated at US$30 trillion, accounted for 30% of the global economy in 2022. The advent of the Metaverse, advancement and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI), big data, analytics and other emerging technologies, has brought rapid digitalization of traditional brick-and-mortar companies. This ongoing digital transformation continues to change the reality of the world, but inevitably brings various digital-related risks such as phishing, online sexual abuse of children, failure of crypto, customer data leaks, and more. While United Nation’s (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and existing ESG frameworks include climate-related issues on climate change, pollution and wastes, digital-related issues are not adequately covered.

Digital-ESG also highlights the positive impact of technology in enhancing sustainability as well as profitability by transforming waste into high-value materials through material innovation, sustainable processing, and digital technology. In an industry collaboration spearheaded by DQ Institute, the Cross Carbon Economy (CCE) model, reconceived from the Circular Carbon Economy model, was proposed as a case study of the Digital-ESG for the energy sector. The Cross Carbon Economy model emphasizes creating value from carbon waste in a manner that is more equitable to the world. This Cross Economy model can be applied across other industry sectors to provide practical insights and valuable tools to shape the future economy, production and consumption cycle in achieving net-zero.

Co-Chair TDFD and founder of DQ Institute, Dr. Yuhyun Park, explained, “Digital-ESG was developed in response to the increasing demand for transparency and accountability of companies’ digital-related activities. The framework, applicable across all industry sectors and organization types, provides an additional layer to the existing ESG framework to measure the impact of a company’s digital-related activities which are not currently addressed. The Cross Economy model within the framework also presents opportunities for organisations to seek new areas of growth.”

As the first step to implement Digital-ESG, a Taskforce on Digital-related Financial Disclosures (TDFD) was launched with the task to develop international standards that provide investors and other capital market participants with the guidelines on companies’ digital-related risks and opportunities and help them make informed decisions related to their digital economy activities. These new guidelines will fill the gap by providing guidance on relevant Digital-ESG matters that should be disclosed and help shape the standardization of digital sustainability reporting.

Co-Chair TDFD, Professor Lutfey Siddiqi, a Visiting Professor in Practice at LSE IDEAS, added, “ESG considerations are rightly gaining traction as determinants of global investment and finance. As our business world becomes more digitalized, it is only natural that ESG reporting includes material impact of digital initiatives. At TDFD, we aim to develop a set of disclosure standards for activities in the digital space, in familiar formats for organizations, investors and industry practitioners to adopt with ease.”

Looking forward, TDFD will be working closely with relevant parties with the goal to include Digital-ESG disclosures in major internationally-accepted ESG reporting frameworks and sustainability reporting standards. TDFD welcomes industry leaders to contribute to this ground-breaking effort that helps organizations track, manage and disclose Digital-ESG performance.

  • Network Integrity Systems Released Information on Fiber Optic Sensing Technology

Attacks on substations are becoming more frequent across the country, creating new discussions about how to protect the nation’s electrical grid from becoming a critical infrastructure crisis. In a recent article, Network Integrity Systems (NIS) offers modern sensing technologies to detect attempted intrusions in real time and help protect substations from ambush.

The article begins by looking back ten years ago on how the Pacific Gas and Electric Power substation (Metcalf Energy Center) was attacked in San Jose, California, nearly causing catastrophic damage to the area. Attackers entered the facility undetected, firing rifle shots at the station’s transformers. Because the station was only equipped with remote alarms and not higher security protection, authorities only received information that the transformers were overheating, leading responders to arrive almost an hour after the attack was over. Perpetrators have still not been identified.

Fast forward to 2022, and similar attacks continue in Oregon, Washington, and North Carolina. However, these attacks have resulted in widespread power outages lasting for days, leading to catastrophic damages.

According to NIS, fiber optic sensing technology could have prevented these attacks. Installing NIS’ sensor around the substation’s perimeter would have detected the perimeter breach, which allowed the escalation of the attack. In the Metcalf case, the intruders began the attack by entering an underground communications vault and cutting the cable; NIS’ solutions would have detected that initial intrusion allowing authorities to respond and thwart the attack.

An excerpt from the Network Integrity Systems article reads, “Not only would the severed cables have resulted in instant alarms, but the mere act of handling the cables to make the cuts would have been detected.” With the implementation of fiber optic sensing technology, attacks made on substations can be neutralized.

NIS’ INTERCEPTOR and VANGUARD data security solutions and their SENTINEL perimeter and asset protection solutions use fiber optic sensing technology to protect power stations, government and military facilities, National Security Information, data centers, and other critical infrastructure sectors.

Dr. Jivraj is a globally renowned specialist who performs the “All-On-Four” procedure at Anacapa Dental Art Institute, as well as teaching it in seminars around the world.

Clients can also schedule a “painless dental” appointment, where they can receive gentle oral sedation before their procedure. Though clients will remain awake and aware under the sedation, they often report being entirely unconcerned about their procedure, or being in a “dream-like state.”

  • Software Accessibility Testers Announce Braille Devices For Diverse Workforce

As a leader in workplace diversity and equity, the software testing company has made accessibility a core tenant of their business by investing in neurodiverse and disabled team members. The addition of these new braille displays to the Iterators testing team will grant visually impaired employees greater access and input to the company’s digital assets and projects.

For more information on Iterators’ teams and services, visit https://iteratorstesting.com

Braille devices allow visually impaired individuals to easily access and read electronic documents, websites, and even code. These devices transcribe digital spaces through refreshable braille displays, raising and lowering dots to form braille characters that can be read by touch. Though these devices can be costly, Iterators is adamant that the diverse perspectives and skills that such accommodations now bring to their testing process are well worth the expense.

As more and more work enters the digital domain, the unique perspectives and insights of the visually impaired have been increasingly excluded. According to the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), unemployment rates peaked at over 60% in the past decade, nearly tripling the unemployment rate of those without any disability.

Iterators sees this lack of workplace diversity not only as a failure to support vulnerable populations but as a major impediment to quality work. As a software testing company, they maintain that their core tenets of diversity, equity, and inclusion have been indispensable in establishing the quality of service upon which clients like the Library of Congress have come to depend.

Especially when testing and implementing accessibility features, Iterators prioritizes the direct involvement of individuals who benefit from such features. This kind of representation in the testing process can make the difference between a clumsily designed feature, and one that truly ensures equitable access to information and services.

Iterators is confident that the acquisition of new braille devices will be equally beneficial to their visually impaired employees and to the overall testing process, as they continue to credit their rigorous testing standards to the diverse perspectives and experience brought to the table by employees of all backgrounds and abilities.

A spokesperson for the company shared their dream of building a more equitable world “by ensuring that all individuals, regardless of disability, can access their Information Communication Technology.”

  • Stellate Ganglion Block Treatment In Bay Area Launched By Soft Reboot Wellness

Soft Reboot Wellness’s new Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) procedure involves injecting a local anesthetic near a cluster of nerves in the neck called the stellate ganglion – part of the sympathetic nervous system, also known as the “fight-or-flight” response.

More information is available at https://www.softrebootwellness.com/stellate-ganglion-block-treatments

Therapists at Soft Reboot Wellness explain that a traumatic event can cause the stellate ganglion to become hyperactive, causing trauma symptoms such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, hypervigilance, irritability, and others. The center’s new SGB procedure is intended to regulate a hyperactive sympathetic nervous system response and “reboot” the fight-or-flight response that is stuck in “on” mode, forcing it “off” and enabling a reset.

This reset brought about by SGB injections can ease PTSD symptoms or cease them altogether. Although SGB is not considered a cure for PTSD symptoms, professionals at Soft Reboot Wellness believe the new treatment can bring meaningful relief that can last for months.

Before undergoing the SGB treatment, clients are required to fill out an intake form and let the clinic know which medications they are currently taking. During the procedure, clients are awake and alert and can listen to soothing music. The procedure itself usually takes about 15 minutes and leaves some clients feeling temporarily light-headed. As such, clients are advised to arrange for someone to drive them home after the treatment.

Soft Reboot Wellness explains that SGB treatment can provide clients with relief from the physical symptoms of PTSD within days. Moreover, the clinic says that months after SGB, many clients reported a sustained reduction in irritability and concentration problems, as well as improvements in their sense of well-being.

Soft Reboot Wellness is run by Dr. Sara Herman, who has been serving Bay Area cities including Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Mountain View, and Los Altos for over 12 years. Dr. Herman said: “We are excited to offer Stellate Ganglion Block, a powerful therapy, used alone or as a supplement on your ketamine journey, to bring meaningful relief to a range of PTSD and mood disorder symptoms and improve your mental health and wellbeing.”

  • Good Time to Buy a House vs Renting: An Analysis – Todd Uzzell

In the current real estate market, many are weighing the pros and cons of buying a house versus continuing to rent. The good news is that there are many reasons why buying a house can be a wise financial decision right now.

Low Mortgage Rates: With interest rates at historic lows, it’s an excellent time to secure a mortgage and buy a house. The lower the interest rate, the lower the monthly mortgage payment, making it more affordable for people to buy a home.

Stable Home Prices: The housing market has shown stability in recent years, with steady growth in home prices. This stability provides peace of mind for buyers, who can be confident that their investment will hold its value over time.

Building Equity: Renters inevitably are paying someone’s mortgage. Homeowners benefit by building equity in their property. This can help finance future real estate purchases and ensure a higher net worth.

Tax Benefits: The federal government provides tax incentives for homeowners, such as the ability to deduct mortgage interest and property taxes. These benefits can help offset the costs of homeownership and make it more affordable.

Sense of Community: Buying a home provides a sense of stability and community that is harder to achieve when renting. Homeowners are part of a neighborhood and can make long-term plans and investments, such as landscaping or upgrades, knowing that they will reap the benefits.

In conclusion, buying a home can provide many financial and emotional benefits. With low mortgage rates, stable home prices, and the ability to build equity, now is a great time to consider purchasing a house instead of continuing to rent.

  • Toby Maguire Confirms Demand For His Stress Treatment Coaching Due To Covid-19

For the last 30 years, Toby Maguire has been helping individuals and companies manage stress, improve their concentration, and gain greater clarity of their business and personal goals through meditation and coaching.

Toby Maguire said this when interviewed by American Business Announcements, “It has been a joy and a privilege to watch people grow and reach their full potential. From high achievers looking to manage stress or change career to retirees looking for greater peace of mind, meditation always improves your experience of life. It certainly changed mine.” He went on to say, “The level of stress in society is at epidemic levels like never before due to the continuing year after year impact of Covid-19 on society of all nations.”

American Business Announcements research found doctors estimate that between 75% and 85% of illness and psychological disorders are stress related. As a result of it being more noticeable how people globally seem to be stressed, Government websites are recommending taking breaks from news stories, including those on social media. They note it is good to be informed, but constant information about negative events can be upsetting. They consider limiting news to just a couple times a day and disconnecting from phone, TV, and computer screens for a while.

Toby Maguire said, “The estimate that between 75% and 85% of illness and psychological disorders are stress related may sound excessive, but when you think that virtually every cell and organ of the body is affected by stress, then it is easier to understand how it can easily affect our physical and psychological well-being. It cannot be underestimated the impact stress has on us all and the faster one acts on symptoms surfacing, the faster it can be successfully treated.”

  • Active Shooter Survival & De-escalation Training For Individuals & Groups Update

Michael Julian, the personal safety expert behind the survival training, announced that he is offering online programs that individuals and groups can attend at their convenience. Four courses are available on-demand: the 20-minute Lightning Course, the 1-hour Accelerated Course, the 2-hour Power Course, and the 3-hour Comprehensive Course.

    For more information, visit https://training.activeshootersurvivaltraining.com

This update is in response to the increase in active shooting incidents in the US in the last five years. According to the FBI, mass shooting incidents in 2021 went up by 97% from 2017. These violent situations usually happen in densely populated locations, like grocery stores, schools, or arenas.

To help people protect themselves and those around them, ALIVE Active Shooter Survival Training developed an approach that is easy to remember and apply in a high-stress scenario. The 20-minute Lightning Course teaches students the basics of active shooter survival, including how to recognize potential threats and determine safe places to hide and call the authorities.

The 1-hr Accelerated Course adds mindset and visualization exercises and practical activities that will boost the student’s confidence to act in an extreme situation. The course gives practical tips on how to assess the situation and determine the safest time to flee the area.

According to Michael Julian, most people freeze or wait until it’s too late to do something about the situation. With practice and visualization, students are able to break out of this mindset and take life-saving initiatives to protect themselves and others.

The 2-hour Power Course and 3-hour Comprehensive Course delve deeper into the psychology of an active shooter and teach students how to identify possible suspects. These courses also give students access to more life-saving resources like the eBook version of the ALIVE Survival Manual.
