  • No Barriers, a Thousand Lights Shining on Each Other: Diverse Cultures Meet Equally in the Light and Shadow of the Golden Panda Awards

China News Service, Chengdu, September 14 (Reporter He Shaoqing) Former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou took out a panda doll named “Huahua” from his pocket; an American director interpreted giant pandas from the perspective of Chinese philosophy; filmmakers from across the globe traveled over mountains and seas to listen to and see one another… From September 12 to 13, diverse cultures met on an equal footing in the light and shadow of the 2nd Golden Panda Awards.

In 1895, the Lumière brothers of France held the first public screening of short films such as Arrival of a Train in a basement in Paris. Since then, cinema—an art form that relies on light, shadow and time-space, and integrates audio-visual expressions with narratives—has come into existence. In 1925, the world’s first mechanical television set was invented. Film and television have not only reshaped human entertainment and daily life, but also played a profound role in the construction of modern civilization.

Compared with the thousands of film festivals and TV/film exhibitions worldwide, the Golden Panda Awards has broken the boundaries of genre and region since its inception, covering four major categories: films, TV dramas, animations and documentaries. For the 2nd Golden Panda Awards, overseas works accounted for 73.2% of all collected entries, and nearly half of the judges were from outside China.

On the evening of the 13th, 27 awards of the 2nd Golden Panda Awards were announced one after another in the “Land of Abundance” (a traditional name for Sichuan Province). Darlene Veenstra, a 77-year-old Brazilian actress, won the Best Actress Award in the Film Category for her courage to break societal norms; French editor Thomas Mali took home the Best Editing Award in the Documentary Category for Memories of WWⅡ, a work that urges mankind to remember history; the late Chinese director Pema Tseden was awarded the Best Director Award in the Film Category for his film Snow Leopard

Free from the pursuit of popularity and the urge to cater to the market, the 27 Golden Panda Awards embody the empathy of all humanity toward light and shadow, and vividly illustrate the concept that different cultures can coexist harmoniously while preserving their unique charms (“harmony without uniformity, and beauty in diversity”).

“The Golden Panda Awards can leverage the power of images to inspire creativity, convey beauty, promote inclusiveness, and enhance understanding and resonance among people of all countries,” stated Ahmed, Egyptian Minister of Culture, at the Golden Panda International Cultural Forum. He pointed out that exchanges and dialogues between civilizations are an inevitable choice for humanity in the face of global challenges.

The Golden Panda Awards eliminate barriers and break down prejudices. Through them, people not only perceive the diversity of civilizations and the vastness of the world, but also witness the authenticity of individuals and the vividness of subtle details. Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, noted that the world often views Africa through a one-sided lens, but now Africa is taking the initiative to tell its own stories. “I sincerely appreciate China’s efforts in amplifying Africa’s voice, enabling our stories to reach the world in a clearer and more profound manner.”

Over the 130 years since the birth of film and the 100 years since the invention of television, tremendous changes have taken place in how people watch videos, the technologies used in filming, and the audience groups. Artificial intelligence is now deeply involved in the film industry chain. However, during the Golden Panda Awards, filmmakers from around the world unanimously emphasized the need to “return”—to return to the essence of cinema: films are made for people and touch hearts with emotions.

In the view of Hussein Fahmy, a guest of the Golden Panda Awards and Chairman of the Cairo International Film Festival, although some current films feature breathtaking scenes (such as characters flying through the sky and traversing the earth) and various stunning special effects, if technology is only used as a gimmick to grab attention, such works will hardly resonate with audiences from both the East and the West. Films that can arouse empathy among Eastern and Western audiences must have characters that both groups can relate to, making viewers feel as if they have experienced the characters’ lives firsthand.

Vincent Perez, a renowned Swiss actor and director, quoted a Swiss proverb—”Where the heart is, the tongue will follow”—at the Golden Panda International Cultural Forum to encourage global filmmakers to be the actors, writers and directors of their own lives, and create touching works at the intersection of Eastern and Western civilizations. Citing Western Turandot and Chinese Ye Xian as examples, he pointed out that although many classic stories originate from different backgrounds, they transcend cultural boundaries and are passed down worldwide due to the shared pursuit of emotion, beauty and hope.

Perhaps, as Chen Kaige, Chairman of the Jury for the 2nd Golden Panda Awards and a Chinese director, put it, the Golden Panda Awards are precisely meant to build a bridge, making exchanges and mutual learning tangible. “We are all torchbearers, using the camera as our language. Every sincere work is a reflection and response to the destiny of humanity.” Chen Kaige added, “When thousands of rivers converge and ten thousand lights shine on one another, what we see will no longer be ‘you’ or ‘me’, but a shared spiritual home that belongs to all mankind.” (End)

  • Short Review: What is the Caliber of the “Golden Panda”?

In September in Chengdu, the 2nd Golden Panda Awards arrived as scheduled.

A total of 27 awards across four categories—film, TV drama, documentary, and animation—plus the Special Jury Awards, will be announced in this “Land of Abundance”. Works and creators from diverse cultures and styles once again allow the world to witness the charm and potential of images as a “language of empathy”.

As an international film and television cultural award that takes audio-visual works as its carrier, the giant panda as its cultural symbol, and the promotion of building a community with a shared future for mankind as its purpose, what is the caliber of the Golden Panda Awards?

Since the first international film festival in the world—the Venice International Film Festival—was held in 1932, nearly a hundred years have seen the emergence of thousands of film festivals worldwide. Whether it is Cannes in France, Berlin in Germany, Toronto in Canada, or Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong in China, each distinctive film festival is not merely a showcase for the latest cutting-edge achievements of the film industry; it is also a grand feast for the exchange of human light and shadow art.

Different from world-renowned international film festivals that focus more on artistic, commercial, and industrial exploration, the Golden Panda Awards has aimed to build a “golden bridge” for cultural exchange and mutual learning from the very beginning.

The Golden Panda Awards sets no barriers and makes no distinctions between genres, allowing different cultures to meet equally in the light and shadow. For this year’s awards, works from 126 countries and regions were submitted, totaling 5,343 entries—among which 3,910 were foreign works, accounting for 73.2%.

Jurors from all over the world, including Europe, North America, Oceania, and Southeast Asia, selected entries based on criteria such as consolidating the consensus on building a community with a shared future for mankind, promoting the common values of humanity, and reflecting the shared aesthetic pursuit of mankind, thus demonstrating the original aspiration of “appreciating the beauty of each to achieve the beauty of all”.

The number of participating countries and regions, the proportion of overseas works, and the diversified evaluation system all embody the core spirit of the Golden Panda Awards: “appreciating the beauty of all and living in harmony with differences”. This is evident from the nomination list—there are not only Hollywood blockbusters like Oppenheimer directed by Christopher Nolan, but also Snow Leopard by the late Chinese Tibetan director Pema Tseden; not only Nezha 2 (a work that went global from Sichuan), but also The Last Dance which broke the box office record of Chinese-language films in Hong Kong.

As Chen Kaige, Jury President of the 2nd Golden Panda Awards, put it: “Whether it is a poetic expression embodying Oriental aesthetics or a pioneering narrative exploring the digital age, as long as a work carries reflections on the destiny of all mankind, it deserves to be seen by the whole world.” This perfectly captures the essence of the awards.

Compared with film festivals that focus on the results of selection, the Golden Panda Awards places greater emphasis on the exchange process itself. For this year’s event, three supporting activities will be held in Chengdu: “Let’s Watch Movies Together”, “Panda Takes You to Look Around the World”, and “Face to Face with Pandas”.

“Face to Face with Pandas” will take place at the Chengdu Dujiangyan Panda Valley, which features an ecological setting of “semi-wild rearing environment” and “restored original habitat”, allowing guests from the East and West to experience the charm of giant pandas up close. The “WLet’s Watch Movies Together” screening event will show more than 150 films in 15 distinctive cinemas, 10 urban landmarks, and 5 well-known universities in Sichuan. Simultaneously, screenings will also be held in over 20,000 villages (communities), bringing movies truly into every household.

Notably, the Golden Panda Awards Ceremony will once again be held at the Tianfu International Conference Center by the Qinhuang Lake. One month ago, the 460-meter-long “Eaves of Tianfu” at the center witnessed athletes from 116 countries and regions around the world embark on a journey of transcending themselves and exchanging ideas at the World University Games. Now, this largest single wooden structure in Asia will witness how international film and television professionals build consensus through dialogue, enabling different cultures to meet, collide, and resonate in the light and shadow.

Chengdu has long been a hub for East-West exchange since ancient times. The Daci Temple was once the starting point of Monk Xuanzang’s journey to the West to seek Buddhist scriptures; the millennium-old Jinjiang River witnessed Marco Polo’s travels in the East; and today’s streets and lanes of Chengdu interpret the myriad scenes of Chinese modernization through their “comfortable and leisurely lifestyle” (referred to as “bashu life” in local dialect).

The Golden Panda Awards has chosen the giant panda—a symbol of friendship with global recognition—and endowed it with the special symbol of “gold”. When film and television professionals from various countries gather in Chengdu with their unique cultural imprints, the “caliber” of the Golden Panda is revealed in each exchange and mutual learning—it not only fosters the beauty of harmony in diversity between the East and the West, but also cherishes the precious connection of shared human hearts.

  • The Blue Line: A CGTN Documentary on UN Peace Missions

The Blue Line runs 120 kilometers across southern Lebanon. It is not a border, but a fragile withdrawal line, where peacekeepers once stood, and where some fell.

In July 2006, four unarmed UN observers lost their lives there. One was Chinese Major Du Zhaoyu. To this day, his mother says her son is “on duty” to deal with her grief.

Irish Commandant Pat Dillon, then with Team Sierra, created a video to honor his fallen colleagues. He had been evacuated just before the fateful day. “We feel cheated that you were taken from us so young.”

Lebanese interpreter Majid Monzer also worked with Du. “Many times we thought perhaps today was our last day, but we kept going because we love peace. This vest showed we belonged to UNTSO. But sadly, it didn’t save every life.”

In November 2024, just four days before a ceasefire, an airstrike struck Majid’s village. He lost his wife and his right leg was injured.

Two decades on, Du inspires a new generation. Xue Guiqing is a Chinese military observer now stationed in the same area along the Blue Line. “When I saw his smiling face in a photo, it felt as if he were looking at me. In that moment, I felt a sense of legacy, responsibility, and conviction.”

Her team leader, Norwegian Captain Yorgen Paul Lycle, believes peace remains elusive because the world fails to invest enough in it.

That issue looms large today. In August 2025, the UN Security Council voted to end the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) by 2026. But UNIFIL Force Commander Aroldo Lázaro Sáenz insists the role of peacekeepers is still vital. “We made the decision to remain even during the height of the  conflict, because this was the right thing to do. This is our duty.”

Resources are limited; mandates are constrained. Yet many argue peacekeeping remains indispensable. As South Africa’s Defence Minister Matsie Angelina Motshekga says, “It’s a very costly exercise, budgets are very low—but war is even more costly.”

The Blue Line is grim reminder of where lives were lost and where others still serve. In a time of doubt, the world must ask: Can peacekeeping remain the best tool we have to defend the dignity of peace?

  • How a cultural event promotes dialogue among civilizations

An article published in CGTN highlights a grand gathering of the culture industry unfolding in the vibrant Chinese city of Chengdu. The second Golden Panda Awards, taking place on September 12 and 13, celebrate excellence in film, TV drama, documentary and animation from around the world. Moreover, the biennial ceremony is a celebration of world civilizations, aiming to serve as a platform for dialogue grounded in the principles of mutual respect and learning.

Blending traditional Chinese mythology with breathtaking visual effects, Ne Zha 2 has rewritten the history of China’s cinema. Born in Chengdu, the animated sensation has been crowned the country’s all-time No. 1 film at the box office and shattered the world record for animated features.

This same city – Chengdu – once again took center stage on Friday as it kicked off the 2025 Golden Panda Awards, a grand cultural event that aims to bring artists, cultural leaders, and industry professionals from across the globe together in a celebration of intercultural exchange.

The Golden Panda Awards were first launched two years ago in Sichuan Province, home to China’s giant pandas – a cultural icon symbolizing peace and friendship. The biannual event aims to foster dialogue and learning between cultures by recognizing outstanding global film, TV drama, documentary and animation works.

This year’s edition, the second in the Awards history, will see 27 gongs handed out and a packed program full of forums, screenings and cultural activities.

At the center of it all is the 2025 Golden Panda International Cultural Forum, a platform for experts in culture, science and technology to engage in topics such as how artificial intelligence, cinematic language and ecological innovation are reshaping art and society.

“Dialogue among civilizations is not a matter of choice but a universal necessity,” said Egypt’s Minister of Culture Ahmed Fouad Hanno. “The arts can open avenues for dialogue and promote peace, creativity, and innovation.”

Nigeria’s Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, laid stress on culture’s power to “cross borders, unite hearts and reshape narratives.” She hopes that African and Chinese cooperation in gaming and animation could help to “redefine Africa’s identity and invite the world to see our continent with fresh eyes.”

In 2023, Chinese President Xi Jinping introduced the Global Civilization Initiative, putting forward a new vision for humanity, one where world civilizations coexist in mutual respect rather than vie for superiority. The Golden Panda Awards bring his vision into life.

Beyond the forum, cultural exchanges such as the “Panda Takes You to Look Around the World” exhibition are expected to connect filmmakers, producers and investors in fostering global cooperation in film and television. The “Let’s Watch Movies Together” screenings of classic films featured titles such as The Legend of 1900, A Separation, and 2001: A Space Odyssey, capturing the public’s imagination. Meanwhile, a short video and graphics campaign titled “Our Panda” has collected over 70,000 submissions from more than 50 countries.

This year’s awards have attracted entries from 126 countries and regions – 22 more than the inaugural edition – with overseas works making up more than 73 percent. Jury members praised the diversity of voices and perspectives. “We are seeing stories from more regions, with Chinese stories particularly impressive,” said Mal Young, an award-winning TV producer and screenwriter from the UK, also the chair of the jury for the TV Drama category.

For many participants, the Golden Panda Awards represent more than recognition of artistic excellence; they are a building block in a bridge of friendship between East and West. Winner of the 2023 Best Actor award for his role in the 2020 Holocaust film Persian Lessons, Nahuel Perez Biscayart, of Argentina, said, “Good stories have no borders. Human resonance is the true universal language.”

Embodying President Xi’s words that “Diversity spurs interaction among civilizations, which in turn promotes mutual learning and their further development,” the Golden Panda Awards use the language of film and television to bring diverse cultures onto a shared stage where everyone can shine equally.

  • How US Open Tennis Fashion Drives PINSPARK’s Vision: Achieving the Perfect Balance of Sport and Elegance

The US Open concluded on September 8th. In addition to the intense matchups, the fashion trends on the court were equally remarkable. From classic white tennis dresses to modern technical fabrics, tennis attire is redefining the boundaries between athletic performance and elegant style. Tennis fashion, as a dynamic and integral part of the sport’s culture, is masterfully redefining the synergy between high-performance athleticism and timeless elegance. The transition from classic, crisp white ensembles to bold colors and innovative technical fabrics marks an exciting new chapter where self-expression meets supreme functionality.

A Century of Evolution in Tennis Fashion

The evolution of tennis wear clearly reflects social changes and the liberation of women in sports. This journey began in the 1920s with restrictive long skirts and sleeves, which were symbolic of the era’s etiquette yet hindered movement. Pioneering players like Suzanne Lenglen, who introduced shorter sleeves and pleated skirts, began to challenge these norms. The post-war era saw a significant shift with the introduction of shorts and more practical dresses, allowing for greater freedom and power. Today, the game is dominated by lightweight, breathable, and highly flexible fabrics that offer unparalleled freedom of movement. This historical process is not merely about changing hemline lengths; it is a continuous, conscious effort to perfect the balance between adhering to tradition and embracing innovation, while ensuring athletes feel both professional and authentically beautiful.

The Dual Pursuit of Function and Aesthetics

Modern tennis apparel has transcended its basic function to become a sophisticated fusion of cutting-edge technology, intentional aesthetics, and cultural statement. Designers and brands now operate at the intersection of science and style. Every garment is created with a clear purpose: moisture-wicking fabrics keep players dry, four-way stretch materials move in sync with the body’s most extreme extensions, and advanced UV protection shields against hours under the sun. Strategic seam placement prevents chafing, while built-in compression supports muscles. Yet, these technical elements are seamlessly woven into designs featuring flattering silhouettes, modern cuts, vibrant patterns, and elegant details. Meticulous attention to both form and function ensures that players do not have to choose between looking good and performing their best; they can achieve both simultaneously.

    PINSPARK‘s Design Philosophy
