  • Theaster Gates’s Black Chapel, Seven Leslie Speakers and The Organ Man

Theaster Gates Exhibit at The New Museum New York City Features Shedrick Mitchell

Manhattan, New York Jan 27, 2023 (Issuewire.com) – Theaster Gates’s Black Chapel, Seven Leslie Speakers, and The Organ Man

Driven by a conscious intent to dive deeper into the mental processes of Theaster Gates, always prepared to stretch beyond reasonable limits, a promenade through the rooms of his current New York City exhibit spanning the entire New Museum, “Theaster Gates: Young Lords and Their Traces,” is a theatrical experience itself, revealing a monumental personal curation of historical symbolism. But beyond the visuals, arose a visceral sound, obscure and familiar, penetrated to its destination – the ear to the heart, the soul, and the spirit.

Elevator doors opening on the top floor debunked the mystery behind the sound. There was no staging of any sort, nor any linking dialogue or explanation of the design, and not a word from the man playing the Hammond organ at the center of the exhibit, only the sound that found our common roots. Seven Leslie speakers decidedly placed high on the adjacent wall delivered the nonverbal communication, clear and powerful, amplifying the treble and the bass of its spiritual spectacle. The organist activated his instrument with an unrecognizable, glacially slow organ melody vibing a hint of ominous ballad or transfigured hymn, mesmerizing unsuspecting congregants. He cycled his session through the filters of soul, jazz, Romantic, Black Baptist choral march, atonalism, Baroque, and Gospel praise, as if to make the point of the foundational heritage.

Theaster Gates’s Young Lords and Their Traces commutes chapel components on the fourth floor with fragments of spiritual symbolism – named “A Heavenly Chord” apparently by the witness of a mother’s prayer closet alternative by the tiles from a bathroom floor in one corner; a salvaged church bell in the other; configurations of church pine adorn sidewalls; a series of Leslie speakers mounted as artwork and in the center the Hammond B3 organ activated by its pied piper Shedrick Mitchell, quickening the space by uncommon assertion behind the 800-pound instrument that ordinarily has never been expressive enough to become art for tourists. Ordinarily.

Shedrick Mitchell was using a familiar instrument, but in an eclectic, much freer, and much more expressive way, flashing some spontaneous complicated rhythms inside popular songs, seamlessly flowing through soul classic “People Make the World Go Round” to a worshipful anthem by Andre Crouch, mesmerizing his audience and entranced himself, by his own rapturous moments. The mysterious intro, later discovered as an original composition by Mitchell called “Meditation” played at the start of each performance to usher him into that space poured into a hymn and in the same spiritual tremor, his soulful erudition, clarity of touch, and rhythmic surety made Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” a religious locution by exuberant moments of holding notes while sweeping his hand firmly across the upper register.

The organ has extremely specific cultural associations and Mitchell isn’t afraid to show its power. In his hands and the walking bass lines at his feet, it becomes an engulfing, screaming instrument. Hints of Gospel undertones foster the anamnesis of the Black church evolved through generations of American culture – a tradition as familiar to believers and nonbelievers as witnessed by the museum-goers represented. Jessica, with friends Kamryn and Kelsey unwittingly drawn by the crowd that had gathered in a semi-circle around the unmanned organ, described the way the music strikes an emotion, “that makes you feel good inside without the musician ever saying a word,” each sharing how the sound transformed the atmosphere and their sensibilities. “We were really confused. When we got upstairs we just saw people waiting around – and we were like – ‘what’s happening?’ Then he came out and he really killed it,” Kelsey began, “it was like church.” They were not alone, three of dozens enchanted by the sound. A handful of guests had traveled specifically to experience Mitchell at the exhibit, Amanda from Chicago, and hometown friends, Dawn and Eric, who traveled from Maryland.

Moving out of the shadows as a sideman – although not so shadowy in that capacity – a long record of tours and production credits with legends (to whom he makes tribute during his museum set), Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Jay-Z as the abbreviated list, Mitchell gives rise to his solo career here at the New Museum as a one-man phenom with a bold announcement to the world – a promising step in his evolution. Mitchell’s fascinating background interrupted his solo pursuit for decades. Highly sought after for session work and touring musicians for top-billed entertainers and broadcasts (maintaining musical director for Maxwell), he turned vigilant on his solo track. The COVID-19 pandemic slowed down business just enough for career clarity, birthing seven solo projects and a national tour of his works. He will perform his most recent project, “What Do You Say?” at Dizzy’s Club Jazz at Lincoln Center, Monday, February 6. 2023, featuring his jazz trio.

The commonality between Theaster and Shedrick, marked instant brotherhood, to be midwestern, Black, and church boys at the foundation – musicians and visionaries – educated and accomplished. Shedrick first learned music in his church and by formal study in his hometown of St. Louis and rounded out his master studies at The New School Mannes School of Music. When the New Museum came calling, Mitchell chiseled the path for collaboration; a series of firsts for both men.

“It’s a journey for me – an hour and ten minutes journey – hearing the sound of the Leslies bouncing off the wall and the acoustics, it’s euphoric for me and kind of takes me on a trip, which takes me a while to come down once I finish playing,” Shedrick explains, “after the first ten minutes I’m caught away.” In celebration of “Theaster Gates: Young Lords and Their Traces,” Shedrick Mitchell will play final performances Tuesday, January 31 through Thursday, February 2, and Sunday, February 5.

  • Jai-Jagdeesh Builds New Bones from Dust

Musician and Songwriter, Jai-Jagdeesh, explores rebuilding herself on the journey out of trauma and grief.

Washington, D.C, District of Columbia Jan 27, 2023 (Issuewire.com) – Jai-Jagdeesh releases her new album, ‘From Dust‘ today through Spirit Voyage Records. This album is a musical journey through trauma, grief, and recovery. As her broken heart crumbled, Jai-Jagdeesh allowed her music to wander in and out of reality and threads of what we call “sanity.” She explores the layers of humanity on her most daring and introspective project to date.

From Dust exists because something horrible happened. Words fall short when I try to describe it,” says Jai-Jagdeesh, “but the result was that my heart broke, my body shut down, and my soul seemed to disappear. In that lost place, I wrote songs and made sounds. I tried, and failed, and tried again to gather together the pieces of what had once been a life that made sense to me.”

From that process comes this album, rich with lyrics and melodies that express the discomfort and challenge of the liminal space, the chapter between what was and what will be. Guitars awash in reverb twist with the tails of violins to create a bed for her honest and intimate vocals. ‘From Dust’ is a falling apart and a search for rebuilding; a bittersweet journey; and Jai-Jagdeesh expresses it with the most exquisite and intentional touch.

‘From Dust’ includes thirteen tracks, taking us on a vulnerable musical journey with the release of the full album. It is available on all major music platforms.

    Jai-Jagdeesh

Jai-Jagdeesh’s latest musical autobiography, “From Dust,” is a poetry of broken loss that teaches how to become whole again. Jai-Jagdeesh spent the past few years confronting uncomfortable truths and questioning long-cemented beliefs – oftentimes in the wake of devastating revelations. Asking “why” and “how” came first, followed closely by introspection, and as layers of trauma revealed themselves and her foundation crumbled, a painful process began. This dark chapter, with its quest for understanding, learning, repair, and renewal, is revealed over the course of 13 tracks. Listeners are invited to bear witness to the grief and growth that comes from facing betrayal and disillusionment as Jai-Jagdeesh reclaims her whole Self – encouraging listeners to do the same.

Jai-Jagdeesh has toured globally, taking audiences on a musical ride that transcends the all-too-brief concert-going experience. Having amassed millions of listeners with songs that defy classification, Jai-Jagdeesh’s relationship with music continues to span continents and cultures through the wide ocean of the human heart. During her career, she has collaborated with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ian Urbina, charted multiple times in the top five of iTunes’s World Music Charts, and charted in the top ten of Billboard’s New Age Music charts.

  • HWPL Inspires Official Request for a New National Holiday Centered Around Peace in the Philippines

Chairman Lee Man Hee receives award from VIP

HWPL partnered with Volunteer Individuals for Peace to host the First Philippine National Peace Convention, on the 25th of January 2023 to create policies for sustainable peace in the Philippines and endorse January 24th as the National Peace Day.

Chicago, Illinois Jan 27, 2023 (Issuewire.com) – Through partnering together, Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) and Volunteer Individuals for Peace (VIP) are paving the way for everlasting peace to be realized in the Philippines through hosting the first ever Philippine National Peace Conference in Manila. This was following the official launch of the 32nd HWPL Peace Tour by Chairman Lee Man-Hee and the delegation of HWPL. The Philippine National Conference was hosted over two plenary sessions and focused on the topic, “Peace Builds One Nation, One Future: Peace is Here!” A new national holiday, “National Peace (or Truce) Day,” was unanimously endorsed by various sectors of the Philippine community and will be presented to the Philippines’ President.

The event launched with a Press Conference attended by 100 journalists from 89 media organizations. Represented amongst over 1,500 attendees at the plenary sessions were organizations consisting of NGOs, lawmakers, law experts, academia, youth sectors, women’s sectors and religious and cultural leaders.

The plenary sessions were divided into two parts, with the first session consisting of the opening program, endorsement speeches and breakout session to discuss five topics with the goal of establishing a resolution to endorse and present to the President of the Philippines.

    The five topics discussed were;

    • Policy making for the realization of peace in the Philippines.
    • Institutionalizing Peace Education, empowering the youth and raising peacemakers.
    • Significant role of media in the promotion of peace.
    • Significant role of inter-religious, interfaith and intercultural values to achieve peace and national unity.
    • Significant role of women as sustainable peace partners.

The second session consisted of the results of the discussion and the verdict being shared on whether the sectors agreed to adopt and endorse the resolutions made for establishing peace in the Philippines. All five proposed policies for the framework of peace in the Philippines were endorsed by all concerned sectors, and the resolution to establish January 24th as the National Peace Day in the Philippines was also endorsed and will be presented to the President of the Philippines.

Commissioner Ronald Adamat encouraged the members of the convention to unite for the further development of peace initiatives in the Philippines stating that, “Whilst it is imperative that we cannot totally stop the proliferation of violence and lawlessness and war, we can surely significantly and effectively make a difference and we will start today.” In addition, the Commissioner encouraged support for an official endorsement for January 24th as a new national holiday announcing, “It shall be a truce day when the whole country shall reflect on the importance of peace, harmony, love and unity,” and “It shall contribute to the promotion of HWPL’s Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW).”

Concluding the event, Chairman Lee Man-Hee spoke on the importance of the DPCW and collective effort for peace and promoted this idea. “As we are working for peace and the cessation of wars and as a legacy for future generations, we have to gather our hearts and work as one,” Chairman Lee stated. “The story of Mindanao is such a success story for peace that the global community was amazed and the Philippines has become a leading example for peace. It is an example set for the global community and light shed for the whole world,” he added. Chairman Lee encouraged cooperation between the government and its people for peace stating, “The government should have love for its people and the people should have love for its government and that will in turn come back to the people and in this way we can truly become one.”

Let us all bow our heads in homage at His Holy Lotus Feet.”

In the month of maagh, January/February, the auspicious day of Panchmi (the fifth day of the lunar fortnight in the Hindu Calendar), which is popularly known as Basant Panchmi, is considered a blessed and sacred day among Hindus and is welcomed as a harbinger of joy and exuberance. With the passing of the winter season, as soon as the season of Basant commences, there is an infusion of new energy in animals as well as birds, human beings, and vegetation. Saints to have compared the time for the manifestation of the Supreme Lord of All Creation on this earth with the most majestic of all seasons–Basant.

“Let us, dear friend (fellow spirits) rush to get the blissful vision of Basant,

Basant which is flowering with joy and bliss here, there, and everywhere.”

The Basant season is of special significance for Dayalbagh, the headquarters of the Radhasoami Faith situated in the city of Agra. For the satsangis of the Radhasoami Faith, the auspicious day of Basant is one of extreme happiness and Bliss as on this sacred day, February 15, 1861, the first Revered Leader of the Faith, Param Purush Puran Dhani Huzur Soamiji Maharaj, revealed for the first time the Divine message of the salvation of all creation and mercifully opened the doors of Satsang to the general public.

Most Gracious, Ever Merciful, All benevolent, Sant Satguru has revealed the secret.”

On the auspicious day of Basant Panchmi, on January 20, 1915, the fifth Revered Leader of the Radhasoami faith, Sir Sahabji Maharaj, laid the foundation of Dayalbagh, the headquarters of Radhasoami Satsang by planting a Mulberry seedling. Along with this, the foundation of a new Satsang culture was also laid. At Dayalbagh, Education and Culture or a Way of Life commenced in the form of a very beautiful and delicate plant, on January 1, 1916, with a Model School popularly known as Radhasoami Educational Institute (REI). This plant slowly and gradually grew into the vast tree that it is at present, in the form of a University, the impact of which can be felt not only in different parts of the country but also in countries abroad. The fragrance of this tree named Dayalbagh Educational Institute, is spreading in all four directions.

“I have found the All-Gracious, Ever Merciful Supreme Being, the only True Ra-Dha-Sva-Aah-Mi Satguru Sant

In my heart the melodious eternal sound current reverberates in everlasting Bliss.”

On the occasion of Basant, in Dayalbagh, a variety of programmes like baby Show, Fancy dress Show, Gymnastics and different Sports events are organized. In all these programmes, children, youth, and all brothers and sisters actively participate with enthusiasm and zeal.

On the auspicious occasion of Basant, in Dayalbagh and in Satsang colonies all over the country and at DRSAE Branch venues Stokenchurch (UK), Birmingham (UK), Bensheim, at Center Kiel (Germany), AREA satsang Amsterdam (Netherlands), at MPG Oslo (Norway), Helsinborg (Sweden) and at other locations in U.K. and Europe-wide, the most glorious and attractive decorative lighting are displayed at night. For this candles and oil lamps (diyas) which can cause pollution, are not used. LED lights, powered by solar energy are used for this lighting decoration.

Followers of Ra-Dha-Sva-Aah-Mi faith celebrated the occasion with variety of cultural programs, sports and Prabhat & Sandya Feri. “It was great opportunity to work with cooperation (Sahyog) collectively (Sangadan) to make event Successful (Safalta). This all happened by HIS grace and mercy.” said Dr. S.K. Gautam, President of Dayalbagh Radhasoami Satsang Association of Europe (DRSAE).

  • Award-winning filmmaker CJ Vecchio takes over as Director of the Chicago Horror Film Festival.

    Chicago Horror Film Festival

Chicago, Illinois Jan 25, 2023 (Issuewire.com) – The Chicago Horror Film Festival was founded by author and horror fan, Jason R Davis back in 2003. To this day, CHFF continues to be a tradition of Chicago featuring local and international filmmakers with over 300 indie films submitted for this year and with more to come. In all the years of its existence, CHFF has “Gorified” the renowned theaters of Chicago, including The Patio Theater, The Des Plaines Theater, and The Portage Theater.

For its 20th year anniversary, CJ Vecchio, an award-winning horror writer, director, and Chicagoan is all set to take over the 24th season of the Chicago Horror Film Festival. CJ Vecchio is known for writing amazing horror movies with eye-opening characters and a superb atmospheres. Some of the most renowned films by CJ Vecchio include “The Attic”, “Evil’s Revenge”, “Make A Wish”, “Bee-El”, and his feature fan film “The Evil Three” (still in post) along with a handful of terrifying screenplays ready to be made.

CJ Vecchio makes use of classic horror elements and principles to strike fear into the hearts of the viewers. His movies are relatable to everyone, making them even more impactful. While talking about the CHFF, CJ Vecchio said: “We get films submitted to us from around the world, not just from Chicago. I’m looking to take CHFF to the next level in helping indie filmmakers take their next step and help promote their talent. Being an indie horror writer and director, I understand the struggles of all indie filmmakers. I aim to support them and to provide them
with an ideal platform where they can showcase their skills.”

CJ’s plans will be updating the CHFF website, taking its social media platforms to the next level, and launching a YouTube channel to showcase the filmmakers who submit to the CHFF. CJ Vecchio said ” We’re currently in talks with a few possible venues to host the 2023 festival, which is set for September of this year. My focus is venues that can be easily accessible to fans and filmmakers, either by car and public transportation.”

Joe Reilly, director of the indie short hit, The Lake Parasite, commented: “It’s refreshing to see such a great festival being handed off to someone who has a proven track record with filmmaking and horror. The CHFF is in great hands.”

Bret Lada, actor and director of the film festival award-winning The Andy Baker Tapes (coming soon to StreamBox), commented: “It’s only fitting that the indie king of horror, CJ Vecchio, is taking over the reigns to this fantastic festival. His dedication to the genre is unmatched and I can’t wait to see what he does with it. CJ has been a power house in the indie horror community the last few years and I’m super excited for him and the Chicago Horror Film Festivals future.”

The CHFF had previously been owned by Willy Adkins (Spook Show Entertainment / Breaking Fate Entertainment) “It’s only fitting that the indie king of horror, CJ Vecchio, is taking over the reins to this fantastic festival. His dedication to the genre is unmatched and I can’t wait to see what he does with it.”. Since 2010, Adkins has worked tirelessly to elevate CHFF to heights. In 2019, Adkins announced his intention of finding a new owner and director for CHFF, and now, for 2023, Plan-C Entertainment, along with CJ Vecchio takes the helm.
